But at the end of the day, we all want hydrated, non-frizzy, healthy-looking hair.
As someone with curly, almost"mane-like" hair, I've had my fair share of trials and errors before finding out how to best care for my hair. I love caring for it so that I can rock it natural, or spice it up usually every couple of weeks with a different style.
For luscious, healthy hair, we have to dive into four main categories:
1. Products used:
The products used should be adapted to your hair types, concerns, and needs. But overall there are a few tips we can all use:
-Have in your shower 2 types of shampoos. Both for your hair types but one that is focused on cleansing the hair.
-if your hair is longer than your shoulders, you need to be using a hair mask minimum every 2 weeks, and a hair oil every few days in between washes on the tip of your hair.
-Unless you are swimming daily or working out to a sweaty scalp, avoid washing (especially shampooing) your hair daily. It is very drying, a waste of products, and will cause your hair to get oily quicker.
For hair masks, I love adding a mixture of avocado oil, olive oil, and/or organ oil on my hair and letting it rest for a minimum of 3 hours. It brings my curls back to life and hydrates the ends of my hair like no other.
2. The application of those products (and consistency)
You bought a hair mask but never use it? You forget to braid or tie your hair at night? You are not seeing results?
Products only work if we are consistent and follow the directions.
Outside of the products, how often are you getting haircuts? A trim is needed when your ends are looking dry.
3. Styling (and heating)
We all know that heat is damaging to the hair. Be careful of the frequency, the heat level. Remember to use a heat protectant before styling and finding ways to stretch your styles between washes.
On wet hair, use a brush made for it. If you have curly but frizzy hair, you might be forgetting to use additional leave-in conditioner and mousse after a hair washing day.
4. Hairstyles/ maintenance until the next wash
The tight ponytail on freshly washed hair is not ideal. Wet hair is fragile and at risks for breakage.
