As a sustainability enthusiast, I've developed my own relationship with shopping. I believe that both can co-exist if we choose to purchase items that we truly love, that will last the test of time (in both style and quality), and that fit us properly- shapes, colors, sizes, and functionality with the rest of our wardrobes.
There are some gems found even in fast-fashion stores that fit all of the above criteria. There are items from sustainable brands that might not be useful in your life, so purchasing them and not using them is not a sustainability-centered approach.
We have to take into account that budgets play a big role for must of us. My tips: be patient. When an item of good quality, that you would have purchased at full price, goes on sale, that is the moment to grab it. During Amazon Prime Day (an event that is in itself highly unsustainable), I jumped on a pair of Levis denim shorts that were highly discounted. Levis is a quality brand, and the style fits me and can be worn for years to come. I can pair it with one of my favorite top: a shirt from Zara that I've own for over 8 years and wear it often. My belt? Vintage leather belt from my grandma's closet. As for my shoes, I love rocking my Veja white sneakers. I were them daily. They are stylish, comfortable, made sustainably, and go with everything.
One of the key for sustainable living is to be aware of the impact our choices have. We have a responsibility to care for our items for as long as possible. Once we know we do not want that item anymore, it is our job to find it a new home (by donating/ selling/ giving/ swapping). Long lasting items originate from quality materials and proper care at each wash. It is also to not jump on every trend and to realize that what you have in your closet is part of your current wardrobe options too- trust me, I've thought "I have nothing to wear" too! Buying staple pieces allow you the flexibility to mix-match your items. Outfit repeating is also important. If Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and Tiffany Haddish can outfit-repeat, so can we.
Caring for our minds and bodies is important for our health. But our planet is hurting too! We have to help it heal.
I do not claim that my philosophy is the best or the purest for the world, but it works for me and has allowed me to find balance.
